Endeavour Academies, in Middlesbrough, seeks two non-executive directors to join their board. The trust is specifically looking for candidates who can add expertise in HR and health and safety. The trust currently has two schools, a large 11-18 secondary school and a primary school that is soon to join.

Board meetings are held at Macmillan Academy, Stockton Road, Middlesbrough, TS5 4AG

About the trust

Endeavor Academies is based in inner-city Middlesbrough, with some of the most deprived wards in the country providing students who attend the trust’s founding school. The founding school is an 11-18 academy with 1600 students on roll. As a former city technology college and converter academy the founding school has a long established reputation in Teesside. The trust is also about to expand, an anticipates welcoming a further primary in due course.

There will be a continuous focus on teaching, learning and student progress in classrooms with the preparation of students to face the world through experiences much wider than curriculum subjects.  

 

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

-       To maintain standards despite changes in examination and assessment systems and in context of a challenges around teacher recruitment.

-       To secure non-executive directors capable of bringing further expertise to the trust, as well as improving overall levels of accountability.

The trust is seeking to grow, with the aim of becoming a trust of five academies in the near future. The trust is also bidding for teaching school status in order to enhance the suite of continuing professional development opportunities.

 

Role Summary

Role 1 – Trustee/ Non-executive Director

The trust seeks a non-executive director with the ability to contribute to the trust’s human resources expertise. This individual will provide advice on policies and procedures, the appointment and dismissal of staff, hearing appeals and grievances.

Person specification

Trustees will contribute to the work of the academy by offering insight, challenge and vision in order to improve the standards across the whole trust. By welcoming individuals from a broad background, the mix and diversity of the trust board is positively impacted.

 

Time commitment

Up to six, two-hour meetings across the academic year.

  

Role 2– Trustee/Non-Executive Director

The trust seeks a Director who can work with the health and safety advisor ensuring that all schools meet the conditions of the Health and Safety at Work Act. Equally, the director should be able to give advice on building conditions, environmental considerations and maintenance scheduling.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 69% of secondary schools and 23% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

 

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

 

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
