Medway Anglican Schools Trust

Medway Anglican Schools Trust (MAST) based in Medway, Kent seeks three new non-executive directors for its trust board. Board meetings are usually held at St Margaret's CE Junior School, Orchard Street, Rainham, ME8 9AE.

About the trust

Medway Anglican Schools Trust (MAST) is a Church of England (CofE) multi-academy trust (MAT) based in Chatham, Kent. The trust was formed in September 2015 and is currently comprised of one average sized primary school; All Saints CofE Primary School with a school roll capacity of 315 pupils, one above average size junior school, St. Margaret’s CofE Junior School with a school roll capacity of 360 and one smaller than average infant school, St. John’s CofE Infant Schools with a school roll capacity of 90. The schools sit in varying deprivation demographics within Medway, with two in the country’s top 10% of most deprived areas and one in a mixed demographic. The cohorts consist of above average levels of those eligible for pupil premium from 12% to 23%. With two schools having higher than average proportions of pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds and who speak English as an additional language. SEND is another area of high need across all the schools within the trust. All three schools are judged by Ofsted as being good schools and on track to retain their judgements at their next inspections. Maths is the focus area across the trust with a trust wide strategy in place. Pupils at all schools make good progress from their starting points, with the board's standards committee working with the local governing bodies to drive aspirations and success.

MAST has agreed a growth plan with the Department for Education which will see the trust expand to seven schools within three years. The MAT is underpinned by its Christian ethos but is open to both CofE and community schools. Presently, the trust has plans to submit free school bids, including consideration for a secondary school and is in discussion with other schools who are interested in joining the MAT.

Trust ethos & values

MAST’s ethos is Maximising Achievement and Succeeding Together. The aim of the trust is to provide an outstanding education for its pupils, ensuring that all its children and school communities achieve their maximum potential and are well prepared for the next stage of their lifelong learning journey both academically and personally.  MAST’s schools welcome supportive communities who value every individual and promote the rights of all to have a positive experience at school and developing their understanding of both Christian and British values.

Plans for the Future

Ensuring successful growth will be the main focus for the trust over the next year, and as MAST expands, the trust will look to evaluate its leadership and governance structures.

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Maintaining financial solvency during a period of decreasing budgets whilst ensuring central functions are enhanced to reap economic benefits.
  2. Succession planning of the trust as it expands in both leadership and management and governance.
  3. Ensuring standards raise in line with the trust’s vision ahead of upcoming Ofsted visits in the next six months.

Governance Structure

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 69% of secondary schools and 23% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
