Lumen Learning Trust, a primary phase multi-academy trust of three primary schools based in Surrey seeks to recruit two new board members. Board meetings are held at Saxon Primary School, Briar Road, Shepperton, Surrey, TW17 0JB.

About the trust

The Lumen Learning Trust is a primary phase multi-academy trust based in Spelthorne, Surrey. The area has higher levels of deprivation than the rest of Surrey with pupil premium percentages more in line with national at an average of 16% in each school.  The trust’s English as an Additional Language populations exceed national figures where they make up between 25-30% on average across the three schools, with no single language or ethnic group making up a significant proportion of this population. 

At the heart of what the trust does is to provide high-quality provision. The trust’s vision is to ensure our schools provide the community’s children the best foundation to their school career and they leave primary fully ‘secondary-ready’ – well-placed to make the most of any opportunity that supports their route to becoming happy, successful adults, ready for the world of work.

The governance structure of directors and governors, working with the school leaders, is pivotal in the trust’s aim to make every community school at least a Good school.  Each school is at a different stage in its development journey and their respective Ofsted judgements reflect this with two of the three currently graded Good or Good with Outstanding.  Currently the number of children on roll across the trust is approximately 1,440 and the trust aims to be at capacity of 1,680 once expansion programmes are complete and the schools’ profiles in the community have been raised.

Lumen Learning Trust considers all of its teachers as potential future leaders, with a high number of them already specialist subject leaders. Innovative approaches to teaching and learning are led by the trust’s very skilled Executive Principal, who is a National Leader in Education and a serving Ofsted Inspector and who can demonstrate a proven track record for school improvement.  The provision in all three schools has been strengthened and enhanced by collaborative working, peer-to-peer support at all levels, and shared continuing professional development both formal and informal, including TeachMeets and Bring & Brags.

The trust is currently comprised of three primary schools, Saxon Primary, The Echelford Primary and Riverbridge Primary. In addition to the schools, the trust manages a Children's Centre and a nursery, and is exploring the option of opening a special needs free school catering for children with social, emotional communication difficulties. The trust will expand carefully and has been approached by other schools in the area looking to join the MAT. Lumen Learning Trust is keen to ensure that any expansion provides financial stability through economies of scale, whilst ensuring the existing schools within the trust continue to prosper.  The trust anticipates being five schools within three years. The pipeline will be developed by building on ongoing relationships with local schools as well as work with the local authority in terms of identification of different types of provision for the community.

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. To ensure that all schools in the trust achieve a Good Ofsted rating. Both Saxon and Echelford have achieved this and Riverbridge is due for an Ofsted inspection for the first time since joining the trust, as a supported school. The trust expects Riverbridge to achieve a Good outcome at this inspection.
  2. Retaining, recruiting and developing staff. The trust has found being close to the London Boroughs, with London Weighting to be a recruitment challenge. The trust aims to attract high-quality staff by offering excellent development opportunities. Staff retention at the trust is a success, but recruitment is an ongoing challenge.
  3. To identify appropriate new partner schools to join the trust and to develop plans for a special needs free school. The board of trustees is keen to retain the original ethos of the trust, with local provision for the local community, rather than building a brand or expansion for expansions sake.

Person specification

The trust seeks a non-executive director with a background in finance and accounting to join its trust board. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in finance with strong skills and confidence in scrutiny and analysis of financial information.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 69% of secondary schools and 23% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
