We’ve all heard of the Church of England. But, have you ever wondered about all of the different roles available and what goes on behind the scenes? We spoke to Mandy Adams, Recruitment Manager at the Church of England. Here, she sheds light on the inner workings of the Church.

Church of England

The National Church Institutions (NCIs) are a collective group of bodies that together support the mission and ministries of the Church by working with those who serve in parishes, dioceses, cathedrals, schools, other ministries and with partners at a national and international level.

Who are our people?

Our people work in a diverse range of jobs, some of which simply don’t exist anywhere else, like conservation and preservation at Lambeth Place Library or working on our ‘Bats in Churches’ project. From National Environment strategy to Sports Development initiatives, our people work with passion and care whether it’s behind the scenes providing support, leading a team or inspiring others to join us.

How has the Church been making a difference?

A high priority for us is supporting the work of the wider Church through the delivery of a programme of change to support growth through a range of initiatives. Together we have embarked on refreshed work focussed on culture, encompassing leadership, engagement, inclusion and belonging.

Our Belonging and Inclusion strategy and Action Plan sets out the areas we believe will have the biggest impact on shaping the culture of the NCIs to build a place of belonging and inclusion for everyone. It is the result of extensive work and consultation across the NCIs and everyone is welcomed and encouraged to be involved in putting it into action.

Our key themes are:

  • Mentoring and learning: people come together across the NCIs in mentoring relationships that provide learning and development for all participants and enable mutual understanding, empathy and exchange of different viewpoints.

  • Leading and signalling: people see that leaders are accountable for promoting and maintaining our commitment to treat each other with respect.

  • Generous Behaviours: our behaviours towards each other fully reflect our existing staff Values of Excellence, Integrity and Respect and our purpose to serve the mission and ministry of the Church of England.

  • Celebrating and Storytelling: people in the NCIs feel welcomed when they join us and experience a vibrant and varied NCI life that celebrates what we have in common and honours our differences.
