Greenacre Academy Trust

Greenacre Academy Trust is changing young people’s life chances in Medway and Gravesend through raising school standards and an innovative curriculum that prepares them for work and life beyond exams. Two new non-executives are sought - a Chair of Finance and a NED with business growth/marketing experience - to support the trust as it embarks upon significant growth from four schools to around seven. Board meetings are held at in Chatham ME5 0LP and other schools in close proximity.

About the trust

The trust’s vision is for ‘Skills for Life’ to pervade the curriculum and extra-curricular activity of all pupils. This means that in addition to traditional subjects and lessons the young people gain life skills and are exposed to a broad range of potential careers and mentors from the business world both locally and regionally.

The trust facilitates the sharing of good practice across all the academies to spread the impact of successful initiatives and each academy is able to give and receive support irrespective of their Ofsted grading or performance table position. Central services are delivered by the trust and include HR, Finance, Admin, Data, IT Network and Skills for Life, enabling school leaders to concentrate on the quality of teaching and the raising of standards.

The academies include relatively high numbers of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and the secondary school is a non-selective boys school within the highly competitive Kent Grammar system. In addition to the boys secondary the trust currently comprises a shared mixed gender sixth form, two primary schools, a speech and language unit and a private nursery.

Trust ethos & values

The trust prides itself on its Skills for Life Curriculum and on preparing young people for life beyond exams with innovative provision and business experiences. Its aim is to make the academies within the Greenacre Academy Trust the first choice for parents wishing their children to learn vocational and personal skills for a productive and successful life. As well as to make the secondary academies the first choice for employers when looking for apprentices and trainees.

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

1. To continue to ensure that all academies within the trust obtain at least a Good Ofsted review, building on Greenacre’s recent success in improving Chantry Academy in less than two years, followed by further work to build to Outstanding.

2.  Maximise economies of scale as budget constraints evolve supported by a robust three year and outline five-year plan covering all aspects of whole trust engagement and development.

3. Manage substantial growth while maintaining rigour and scrutiny over the existing schools.

In addition, one primary school will see a whole school rebuild within the next 12 months.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 68% of secondary schools and 22% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.

Academy Ambassadors is a non-profit organisation which recruits senior business leaders and professionals as volunteer non-executive directors onto the boards of multi-academy trusts.
