The SASH Education Trust

The SASH Education Trust in Slough seeks two non-executive directors to join their board. Relatively new and comprising of 2 Free Schools, the trust was set up by a group of local head teachers in response to rising pupil numbers and has been very successful. Board meetings are held at Ditton Park Academy, Kings Reach, Slough, SL3 7UX.

About the trust

The SASH Education Trust is the product of a unique, innovative and collaborative partnership involving the head teachers of all thirteen existing secondary school providers in Slough. Both schools in the trust are Free Schools, set up in response to rising pupil numbers in the town.

The first school in the trust, Ditton Park Academy, opened in 2014 and is moving to purpose built accommodation in September 2017. It will be an 11-18 secondary school and currently has pupils in years 7,8 and 9. The school is very successful, popular with local parents and over-subscribed. Grove Academy, the second school in the trust, opens in September 2017. It will be an all through school for reception children through to sixth form students. The initial intake will be restricted to reception, years 1, 2, 3 and year 7.

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Ensuring standards remain high, high quality staff are recruited and the budget is balanced when Ditton Park Academy relocates to brand new permanent site.
  2. Managing the opening of Grove Academy, maximising pupil numbers, recruiting high quality staff and balancing the budget.
  3. Securing a permanent site for grove academy which opens in a timely fashion.
  4. Solidifying the new governance structure that has been developed for the new MAT. Bringing on external, non-education expertise to provide challenge and a different perspective.

Roles  1 -3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Non-executive directors are expected to attend three meetings per year, read relevant documentation and engage in discussion/debate. Relevant training is provided and trustees are expected to visit and get to know the schools to develop an understanding of the education sector and public service

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 70% of secondary schools and 24% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
