Guiseley Multi Academy Trust seeks to recruit a high-calibre Non-Executive Director with legal and/or HR experience to join its expanding board. Board meetings are held at multiple locations in the Guiseley area.

About the trust

The Guiseley Multi Academy Trust (MAT) consists of two schools, both Secondary. The trust is born out of school support delivered by Guiseley School. 

School support was brokered for Grange Technology College in April 2016 in the form of reviews of standards. The level of support to Grange was increased in September 2016, following the May Ofsted inspection which put the academy in special measures - this included Leadership support at Executive Head teacher and Head teacher level. Following two highly successful Ofsted monitoring visits, the contract was extended.

In April 2017, the office of the RSC (Lancashire and West Yorkshire) asked Guiseley to formally sponsor Grange by academising and sponsoring Grange as part of a MAT. This would build upon the highly effective progress made at Grange Technology College and secure a permanent leadership capacity. The Head teacher of Guiseley school also currently works as ‘Executive Head teacher for school to school support’ at Hanson School, in order to stabilise leadership and governance.

Trust ethos & values

The trust’s vision is to create the ‘Thinking trust’, where students will be supported to think deeply. Everyone will be supported to understand the bigger picture, get involved and contribute to the changing world. The trust’s vision, mission, and strategy are guided by core values; ‘Achieve’, ‘Respect’, ‘Challenge’ and ‘Care’.

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Establish the Trust with Guiseley and Grange Schools.
  2. Improve provision and outcomes at the Trust’s first sponsored Academy, Grange Technology College.
  3. Merge and develop two separate workforces in different local authority areas (Leeds and Bradford) into an effective single team.

From 2018 onwards, the Trust would like to encourage additional schools to join the Guiseley MAT. This would give the Trust further capacity – this time, possibly within the primary sector - to convert and also sponsor other schools in Leeds and Bradford area.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

The trust is looking to secure a Trustee with HR / Legal expertise to enhance the skills of the current proposed trustee board.

 Person specification

Whilst proposed members within the trust have legal and compliance experience, there is less expertise within the trustee board. The trust therefore seeks an individual with demonstrable management experience in a legal or compliance setting to join as a non-executive director. An individual who has HR experience may also be useful to add to the existing HR experience within the trust, and improve its operations.

The individual will be asked to develop and review strategic plans; ensure the operation of the trust complies with its legal requirements and delivers a high-quality curriculum, using resources efficiently and effectively, with the aim of delivering outstanding education and outcomes for its pupils and communities.

Time commitment

2-3 hours per month (minimum).

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 70% of secondary schools and 24% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
