Friars Multi Academy Trust

Friars Multi Academy Trust in Wellingborough is a small but growing trust. It seeks three non-executive directors with finance, HR and legal skills to support their special educational needs schools. Board meetings are held at Friars Academy (West), Friars Close, Wellingborough, NN8 2LA.

About the trust

Friars Multi Academy Trust is a newly approved Multi Academy Trust (MAT) situated in East Northamptonshire. The trust currently provides education for 11-18 years olds with a statement of special educational needs or EHC plan. The MAT has specialisms in Cognition and Learning & Communication and Interaction including Autism.

Friars MAT currently has one established academy, Friars Academy West, which is an Ofsted Rated Outstanding School for 145 pupils aged 11-18 with special educational needs. Approval was given by the DfE in April 2017 to open a Free School, called Friars East, to be situated approximately 6 miles from Friars Academy West. The proposal will satisfy increasing demand in the county for special education provision and will begin open using a phased increase in student numbers from 32 in the year of its opening to 145 places by year 5.

Trust ethos & values

The ethos of the MAT is summarised as 'Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day'. The trust works in partnership with parents, students and the community to develop individuals who achieve beyond expectations. Please see https://www.friarsacademy.org/about/ for further information.

Plans for the Future

Governance Structure

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 70% of secondary schools and 24% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
