Veritas Multi Academy Trust

Veritas Multi Academy Trust seeks to recruit three new non-executive directors to its trust board. The trust has plans to grow over the next 12 months and the new non-executive directors will support this growth and the continued success of the trust. Board meetings are held at Warden House Primary School, Birdwood Avenue, Deal, CT14 0JA.

About the trust

Veritas Multi Academy was formed in 2015 and is based in Deal, Kent. The South Kent Coast has a range of deprivation however, deprivation statistics are higher in this area than both the Kent and England average. At present trust has one academy which sees 34% of its pupils in receipt of free school meals. This is higher than the national average which stands at 25%.

Veritas MAT is affiliated with Canterbury Christ Church University. This partnership involves student placements and works to develop opportunities for research and training for trust staff. The CEO of the trust is a National Leader of Education and the trust is committed to engaging its staff and trustees in evidence based practice that pushes the boundaries of effective leadership. Alongside the university, the trust co-organises the annual Canterbury Teach Meet where teachers come together to share best practice. 

The trust is comprised of one outstanding primary school, Warden House Primary School which has 435 pupils on roll. The trust aims to sponsor at least one academy in the next 12 months and has an approved plan to grow to three academies over the next 12 - 24 months. After this growth it is expected that the number of pupils on roll will increase to around 1065 students with a budget circa to £4 million.

Veritas MAT initially plans to sponsor primary phase academies and is open to taking on academies of lower Ofsted grades, due to the trust’s capacity to support and challenge standards through robust system leadership. The trust has a vision of a ratio of one sponsored academy to two non-sponsored academies, to allow the trust to build the resources needed to support lower achieving schools.

Plans for the Future

The trust’s principal aim for the future is growth. At present, Veritas Multi-Academy Trust plans to expand to three academies over the next 24 months.

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Improving standards in trust schools. Robust progress and attainment is paramount across the trust.
  2. The trust’s growth plans will allow the trust to realise the wider financial and strategic benefits of a larger organisation. The challenge for the trust will be to grow the number of academies within the trust while maintaining high outcomes in standards and inspection across the trust.
  3. As the trust grows, governance of organisational change is key to the successful growth plan. Oversight of human resources and the building of strong relationships across trust schools is paramount for trustees, governors and staff.

Person specification

Person specification

The trust seeks to recruit a non-executive director with a finance background. Responsibilities for this role include; the appointment of the accounting officer, quality assuring the finance procedures and compliance of the Regional Governing Bodies, submission of bids on behalf of the trust and submitting the annual accounts to the EFA.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience of working in finance, financial monitoring, audit and risk governance.

Person specification

Marketing and branding experience is particularly sought to develop the trust’s reputation as it expands. In this role, the non-executive director will have oversight of the trust’s ethos and marketing and work with the CEO and board of trustees to develop a strong strategic direction for growth.

Candidates should have experience in branding/marketing, service commissioning and business planning.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 69% of secondary schools and 23% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
