OAK Trust (Oadby and Knighton Trust), in Leicestershire, is in the process of forming and seeks a number of members and non-executive directors to join its expanding board. At least five individuals are sought to help offer expertise and guidance across a variety of key areas including HR, legal and compliance and property. Board meetings are held at Manor High School, Copse Close, Oadby, Leicestershire, LE2 4FU.


About the trust

The trust is in the process of forming and consists of Manor High, a secondary school which caters to children aged 11-16 years, Brookside and Woodland Grange, which are all-through primaries, and Overdale, which is split into two primaries - a junior and an infant school. This totals 5 schools.

Additionally, there is a learning unit on the site of Brookside Primary which caters for up to 20 pupils with special educational needs. Where possible, these pupils are integrated into lessons with other pupils.

The schools are located in relatively affluent areas, however, around half of the children in the Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) come from further afield, in areas across Leicester which are deprived.


Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. The first challenge is to be up and running as a MAT by 1st December 2017, with all documentation, due diligence, schemes of delegation and structures in place.
  2. To create financial security and coherence across the MAT, which links to other issues such as healthy numbers, recruitment and retention.
  3. To establish the ethos of the MAT as a progressive and educationally driven MAT which has the ability to support other schools through collaboration and partnership.

Other schools will be welcome to join once the initial MAT is established.

Person specification

The trust is looking for an individual who can demonstrate some of the above essential criteria. This includes a requirement for an individual with significant management experience in their sector, who can deal confidently with senior individuals on all matters related to strategic planning, technology and change.

It would be advantageous to identify an individual with experience of managing rapid growth and sustaining quality across a number of establishments, including underperforming organisations.

Time commitment

4-6 hours per month (on average).  The trust will meet once per half term (roughly every 6 weeks).  Meetings will last approximately 2 hours and generally start about 5pm.


Role 3 to 5 – Member

The trust is looking to recruit individuals to sit on the Members board, providing independent oversight to the work of the main trust board in order to ensure suitable accountability for its decision making and strategy. Members have a less ‘hands-on’ approach than trustees and meet less frequently. The members are able to alter the trust’s Articles of Association and appoint (or remove) trustees/directors where necessary.

Person specification

To become a member, it is desirable for an individual to have had previous experience in a NED (non-executive director) or trustee role. Potential candidates should be able to demonstrate experience at a senior manager or director level in the private, charity or public sector. Members are expected to uphold the 7 Principles of public life (Nolan Principles) which are selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Time commitment

The members will meet once per term for approximately 2 hours. In addition, members may be invited to attend ad hoc meetings or events to keep updated in relation to the trust or academy developments. Some additional time will be needed to read papers etc.  It is expected that demands on Members will be relatively light and average at no more than 12-15 hours per year.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 70% of secondary schools and 25% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
