Windsor Academy Trust in the West Midlands seeks two non-executive directors to join the board and support seven schools as they plan to expand to 20 schools by 2022. Board meetings are held in Walsall and Halesowen.
About the trust
Windsor Academy Trust (WAT) is formed of two secondary schools and five secondary schools in the Halesowen, Walsall and Dudley areas of the West Midlands. The trust came into being in 2012 when Windsor High School and Sixth Form (one of the first converter academies) was approached by the Department of Education to be a sponsor. This led to the formation of WAT and the creation of a new school, Goldsmith Primary Academy, replacing Harden Primary School on the same site. In November 2013 Green Rock Primary School joined the trust and was renamed Rivers Primary Academy. Both primary schools are close neighbours in Walsall.
WAT has grown substantially over the last few years and now has three learning communities across Walsall, Halesowen and Kingswinford, allowing for a high quality of educational provision through the sharing of ideas and best practice amongst its schools. WAT focuses upon combining a shared experience of primary and secondary schools and promoting student and staff collaboration. This has helped to raise aspirations across a small family of schools united in their ethos and operation to achieve the very best for all their students.

- Swift Academy (Fully Approved Free School to be built in Walsall for 2018/19)
Plans for the Future
WAT will open its fully approved new free school in 2018/19. Swift Academy will provide a greatly needed Secondary Academy to WAT’s Walsall primary academies and local community. The trust also has longer term plans to grow the WAT family of schools from seven to 20 schools by 2022, across four learning communities. The three main challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- Opening a secondary Free School - having been granted the opportunity to open a secondary Free School in Walsall for 2018/19 this needs to be marketed, built and staffed. This will be a key focus for WAT.
- Growth - WAT is ready to grow. Any new school will be subject to due diligence and the governance supervised. The trust also expect to sponsor at least one other school and this will bring a range of new challenges.
- Results – the trust’s main challenge will be to continue the success of the schools in achieving future progress scores. Key to this is ensuring excellent professional development for staff and achieving excellence in governance.

Role 1 & 2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Windsor Academy Trust seeks two non-executive directors/trustees who can bring expertise, energy and wisdom to the Board.
The competencies required for this role include:
- CFO/Finance OR
- HR OR
- Legal/Compliance OR
- Change management
- Risk management
- CEO/General Management
The trust seeks to appoint individuals with professional experience. Candidates should be interested in education and would welcome those with experience as a Trustee. Applicants should be able to attend meetings regularly and visit schools during the day a couple of times a year.
6 hours /month minimum.
Background on academy trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 71% of secondary schools and 26% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 980 multi academy trusts of 2+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
