About UCL HR
UCL HR is a service driven function of approximately 130 talented HR professionals, working closely alongside our eleven academic faculties and our eight professional services divisions to understand and collaborate on their priorities, opportunities and challenges. Our culture and interactions with each other are underpinned by our values, and we seek out innovative ways to demonstrate our commitment to equality and diversity by removing barriers and actively promoting the diversity of our community.
Now is an exciting time to join our HR team. We are currently going through a significant transformation programme to drive our HR agenda and deliver our new HR strategy.
We are recruiting for two Head of HR roles – Head of HR, Institute of Education and Head of HR, Professional Services – which both offer a great opportunity to make a real impact and develop your career in a highly supportive environment. As part of a significant period of change within HR, these are newly created positions which report directly to the Executive HR Director, allowing you to be a key member of the HR Leadership Team and have the responsibility for developing and delivering UCL HR’s strategy.
About the role
The Head of HR for the Institute of Education (IOE) will business partner the Vice-Provost and the Deans within IOE, a world-leading service centre for research and teaching in education and social science with more than 8,000 students and 800 staff; and the Head of HR for professional services will partner the Directors and senior leaders within the professional services divisions, amounting to around 1,600 staff.
As the Head of HR, you will be responsible for developing and implementing local strategies for recruitment, retention, engagement and development of people in line with IOE’s/the Professional Services divisional strategies. Through collaboration with both the senior leaders and a number of the central HR teams, you will plan and implement initiatives in areas such as training and development plans, improving the diversity of senior roles, and embedding a culture of well-being. In addition to engaging and coaching the local HR teams, you will have line management responsibility for two HR Business Partners who will support you on all HR activities within IOE/the professional services divisions.
To be successful in this role, you will have significant experience acquired in a Head of HR (or similar role) role, with your generalist HR experience gained within a complex organisation. You will have proven experience of workforce planning, succession planning, and talent management, with a focus on improving the engagement and retention of people. Experience of developing and implementing an HR strategy within a trade unionised environment, with demonstrable evidence of the subsequent positive changes is also essential.
With proven ability to influence at a senior level, you will be able to work collaboratively with both the central and local HR teams, helping all individuals to feel that they are part of one team. Your tenacity and resilience in the face of challenge and disagreement will be underpinned by your sound judgement and confidence to make significant decisions.
