Amadeus Primary Academies Trust in South East London seeks two non-executive directors from a background in the law or Human Resources to join the board of this growing trust. Board meetings are held in Bexley.  

About the Trust

Amadeus Primary Academies Trust opened on 1 September 2015 and comprises four primary schools in the Bexley area.  There are 1850 students and the schools cover a geographical range of low to moderate deprivation. Two schools have special provision for children with Autism. A further two primary schools have formally requested to join and the trust anticipate growing up to ten schools over the next three years.

The Trust is a mixed multi-academy trust with a Church of England Foundation. Three of the founding schools were CofE Church Schools and one a Community Primary School prior to conversion to academy status. The schools run on ethical values and principles which are explicitly Christian in the Church schools.  Board members do not need to be CofE but sympathetic to the ethos and supportive of the trust’s work to provide a good start in life to children of all backgrounds and abilities.

Plans for the Future

Over the next 24 months, Amadeus Primary Academies Trust seeks to strengthen and restructure the trust board. The key challenges will be:

  1. To effectively challenge school performance and make decisions in the best interests of the whole trust, building on recent reforms to ensure a whole-trust governance approach, independent from the Local Governing Bodies.
  2. To ensure effective school improvement by embedding the trust model for School Improvement with the existing trust schools and provide further school improvement capacity for the planned new schools.
  3. To build sustainable growth to ten schools over three years by working with schools which are committed to the trust core values and effective collaboration, developing financially sustainable effective and efficient systems for central support, growing executive leadership capacity and succession planning.
  4. Identify leadership potential for heads of school, headteachers and executive leaders, providing training and developing roles across the trust.

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Person Specification

Roles 1 and 2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

The trust seeks a non-executive director with a particular focus on human resources, organisational design and development and change. In addition a further trustee is sought with broad governance capabilities, which may come from a legal or compliance background. Trustees are particularly sought who have the time and capability to grow into Chair roles. Trustees may also be asked to join the Audit and Risk Committee.

Person Specification

The trust would welcome candidates with experience of change management and succession planning. It would also be an advantage if individuals came with a background in either branding/marketing or real estate/property but this is not essential.

Background on Academy Trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 28% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 726 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
