Leodis Academies Trust seeks two new board members with strong backgrounds in HR or branding/marketing. The trust was established in April 2016 to formalise the collaborative working of four high performing schools within a three-mile radius. It offers young people the opportunity to experience consistency and security in their education from 3 to 18 years old; from nursery into adulthood. The trust is currently restructuring their governance and seeking to grow Leodis in both the primary and secondary sectors and to collaborate with other small to mid-size MATs for school improvement and procurement. Board meetings are rotated across the trust’s academies which are all in the WF3 area on the Leeds/Wakefield border.
About the Trust
Leodis Academies Trust is currently made up of one outstanding and three good schools (as rated by Ofsted). In addition, the trust is an approved sponsor and is working alongside other schools; both those who share its vision of collaboration offering strength to highly performing schools and those who need support to develop their leadership teams and quality first teaching to improve outcomes. Another primary school is set to join the trust in the autumn which is currently judged ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted and will be the trust’s first sponsored academy.
The principles of the founding schools are:
- Each academy has its own ethos and identity ensuring they have the freedom to develop these;
- Each academy commits to working collaboratively to secure high quality outcomes for;
- Each academy is at a different point on their journey and the trust recognises and supports academies actively and positively in their development;
- Local Governing Boards of founding schools are responsible for overseeing the operational direction under the umbrella of a strategic board of trustees;
- The board of trustees is responsible for identifying when individual academies are in need of additional support and agreeing how this might look.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- Develop the school improvement team to support all the academies across the trust. Particularly but not exclusively, the newly sponsored academy which will join in autumn 2018.
- Ensure the delivery of a robust and sustainable financial plan during the transition to the National Funding Formula and a period of trust growth.
- Maintain and build positive outcomes for pupils as the trust expands against growing financial pressures.
The trust’s four strategic aims are:
- All Academies within the trust reach good or better outcomes.
- All Academies within the trust share a self-sustaining, system-led, collaborative approach to improvement.
- Leadership within and across the trust is at least good and mainly outstanding.
- The number of academies within the trust has grown steadily to secure its future sustainability.

Role Summary Number of Positions Advertised: 2 Roles 1 to 2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

Role 1: The trust seeks a trustee with a strong and demonstrable background in HR, with specific emphasis on change management, organisational development, succession planning and turnaround, to help shape the trust as it seeks to grow in future.
Role 2: The trust seeks a trustee with a strong Branding/Marketing background with specific emphasis on communications, marketing and PR, to help raise the trust profile as it seeks to grow in future.
The Board will meet up to 6 times each year and meetings are held at 6 pm on weekdays. Some trustees may be invited to join the Finance and Risk committee. It is expected that the time commitment will be in the region of 4-6 hours per month (on average)

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 29% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 760 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
