We are seeking experienced candidates for the role of Human Resources Manager at The London Library – a registered charity and one of the UK’s most important literary organisations.

Location: London, SW1

Salary: c£36k (pro rata) incl LW (plus benefits)

Hours: Part-time; can be worked 3-4 days per week (0.6-0.8 FTE) with some flexibility to allow for busy periods

Founded in 1841, The London Library is the largest independent lending library in the world and is considered a vital resource by many.  Past members have ranged from Charles Dickens and George Eliot to Virginia Woolf and TS Eliot; and amongst its 6,500 members today are leading writers, scholars and researchers.  We receive no public funding and are entirely self-financing, relying on membership and philanthropic support.  

Reporting to the Finance Director, this newly formed position represents an outstanding opportunity for a qualified HR professional with strong experience of developing and implementing effective HR strategies, processes and procedures, to play a vital role in ensuring the Library is best positioned to deliver on its new, ambitious vision for the future.  At the heart of this vision is a new 5-year plan which will include continued development of the Library site to provide first-class facilities for members, as well as allowing us to expand our events and engagement programme and maximise commercial opportunities; continued development of the Library’s extensive collection; and continued development of staff, maintaining and building on an enviable reputation for excellence.  

The ideal candidate will have a high degree of emotional intelligence and integrity, and be able to demonstrate a proactive and confident approach in dealing with all HR related matters.  The Library employs 67 staff (58 FTE) and, with part-time support from the HR Administrator, the successful candidate will be expected to manage (or support others to manage) all practical day-to-day issues related to staff management, including recruitment, retention, training and performance.  Together with the Finance Director, they will also shape and deliver organisational and people strategies.  Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
