The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (Central), established in 1906 and based in London, is a specialist college for the performing arts and is a Federal College of the University of London.  With a vibrant international community, it is a higher education institution offering a wide range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate degree level. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, Central ranked as the top drama conservatoire for world-leading research, and among the top UK universities for world-leading impact rooted in our industry-led research. In 2017, Central was awarded Gold Status – the highest level to be awarded – in the Teaching Excellence Framework.   

The School is looking to appoint a Deputy Head of Human Resources to join a small generalist HR department.  The successful candidate will oversee the management of the full HR service across a wide and varied portfolio including: recruitment and retention; training and development; performance management; employee reward and promotion and employee relations.  In the first instance, the primary focus of the role will be to develop the School’s staff learning and professional development programmes and also help embed effective equality, diversity and inclusivity practices across the institution. 

Suitable applicants will have a recognised CIPD qualification and/or equivalent experience.  Applicants must also have experience of assessing roles using an analytical job evaluation scheme, preferably HERA, the higher education role analyst system.  The ability to manage and coordinate complex employee relations cases is essential as is the requirement to have up to date knowledge of UK employment law legislation. Previous experience of working in further and/or higher education is essential.  The successful applicant will have excellent IT skills, be able to build strong and effective working relationships and also be able to write comprehensive business reports and policies.
