The Lime Trust
With primary schools in London and Peterborough and over 1,800 pupils, Lime Trust seeks up to four non-executive Trustees with experience in the legal, property/estates, marketing/comms and HR sector to support their ambitious plans to grow. Board meetings are held in Central London.
About the trust
The Lime Trust currently has four primary schools in London and Peterborough. It was set up in February 2015 following proven success in Lime Academy Larkswood a large urban primary school that moved from Ofsted ‘Special Measures’ to ‘Good’ in just over a year. The trust aims to create a sustainable group of exceptional, high-performing schools that improve life chances, trusted and respected in their communities.
The Lime Trust is building hubs of primary academies in two areas, Cambridgeshire and North and East London. Geographical proximity enables collaborative working within each hub as well as across the Trust as a whole. Three schools are in Peterborough, one in Chingford, London and a school in Cambridgeshire will formally join the trust on 1st February 2019. The trust also has a Free School in Enfield at pre-opening stage (due to open in September 2020).
The Lime Trust works to provide high quality education for pupils through school-to-school collaboration and trust direction, high challenge and high support. This takes the practical form of three key drivers:
- Putting children first: a moral purpose to place pupils’ learning and wellbeing at the centre of all that they do.
- Setting the standard: defining very high standards of practice within each academy and ensuring that they apply universally in every classroom (Lime Trust Principles and Procedures), for every teacher and every pupil; with challenge at all levels to ensure that all children have the very best opportunity.
- Capacity-rich schools: opportunities for professional growth at all levels, for the workforce to continually build and thereby extend the ability of the school to deliver outstanding teaching and learning. Capacity also means great resource management to support learning and the best systems.
The trust currently also offers school improvement support and professional development programmes to schools outside the Trust.
Plans for the future
The Lime Trust business plan aims to have 10 schools within the trust by December 2019, centred on focused clusters in the North and East of London, Peterborough and Cambridgeshire, making the multi academy trust (MAT) an efficient Established Trust.
Lime Trust has a free school in pre-opening in Enfield and is submitting further applications to help meet basic needs where population is growing rapidly across the sub region, working with local authorities in place planning. The trust is also in discussion with a number of local schools about joining Lime Trust.
The trust’s key priority is to support their academies so that all become and maintain at least a 'Good' Ofsted rating and ultimately become 'Outstanding' schools.
Trust ethos & values
At the Lime Trust, they believe that the key to any school’s success is to be outward facing and continuously looking for ways to become brilliant. They operate on principles of effective partnership:
- Equal Partners: the Academies are equal partners within the trust and at all times the partners will strive for consensus in decision making. They will work collaboratively with each other, sharing resources, knowledge and best practice.
- Transparency: they will be open and honest in our dealings with each other, at all times acting in good faith
- Subsidiarity: decisions are to be taken at the level nearest to those affected by those decisions which is compatible with the principles of solidarity and support for the common good
- Solidarity: they share a commitment to the mutual support of all Academies for whom the trust is responsible.
- The Common Good: all recognise their responsibility towards the common good, not just of the Academies but of all of the families and communities in the areas served by the trust.
Purposeful behaviour for learning is evident in our schools through bespoke learning experiences and an expanded curriculum. This helps to support cohesion and a welcoming environement for all.

Roles 1-4 – Non-Executive Trustee
The Lime Trust Scheme of Delegation included describes the role of the Trustee. The Trust provides an Induction and encourages Trustees to participate in a number of government-funded initiatives that support Trustees in their role. The Trust had its first and very successful conference on Governance in November 2018.
Trustee is a formal role in Lime Trust’s governance. The Trustees oversee the management and administration of the Trust and the Academies run by the Trust. The Trustees are personally responsible for the actions of the Trust and the Academies and are accountable to the Members of the Trust, the Secretary of State for Education and the wider community for the quality of the education received by all pupils of the Academies and the expenditure of public money. The Trustees are required as trustees and pursuant to the Funding Agreements to have systems in place through which they can assure themselves of the quality, safety and good practice of the affairs of the Trust.
The Lime Trust wish to add to the number of Non-Executive Trustees and would welcome enquiries and expressions of interest, giving an indication of professional background specifically focusing on the skills of strategic vision, ability to think creatively, good, independent judgement and an ability to use financial and workforce data to inform decision-making. In particular, the Trust would benefit from trustees with the following skills and experience:
- Human Resources
- CEO/General Management
- Corporate Governance
Legal/Compliance: The successful applicant will have significant experience within the legal sector, with demonstrable knowledge of employment law and the ability to make informed decisions and carry out due diligence. Evidence of managing risk at advising at a strategic level is desirable.
Estates and Property: the trust is eager to appoint a candidate with senior level experience in a property/estates management setting. Candidates may have a chartered or quality surveying qualification, a background in property or facilities management or may have experience working for one of the large building contractors focusing on public sectors projects.
Branding/Marketing: the trust seeks a candidate with experience in branding and marketing across any sector however experience of digital branding and marketing is desirable. Experience of embedding effective communication systems across an organisation is important.
HR: it is essential that candidates for this role have senior experience in HR, personnel or employment law. This may have been acquired within a small to medium sized enterprise or through a varied HR consulting practice. Experience of managing staff through growth and organisational change is desirable.

Background on academy trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 832 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
