Job Details

Coventry is changing – and so is our workforce

We are a Council that’s looking for fresh ways of working to tackle new – and old – challenges. We have new offices, hot-desking, flexible working and the systems and equipment to back it up. You would help us take that to the next level and play a key role in creating a modern HR service supporting a modern Council.

And there’s plenty be proud about in Coventry.

We are the UK City of Culture 2021 and European City of Sport 2019, a host city for Commonwealth Games’ netball and the Rugby League World Cup in 2021.We are home to amazing events like the Godiva Festival, Motofest and Pride; sports fans can watch teams such as the Sky Blues, the Wasps, the Blaze Ice Hockey and Wasps Netball; and we have a thriving arts, leisure and cultural scene that is growing all the time as we head to 2021. We have two award-winning universities that attract the best students from around the world and we are famous as a city of peace and reconciliation. We are changing lives in our city – helping people of all ages live a little better and a little healthier.

We are a Marmot City, an Age-Friendly City, and a young city. Our Children’s Services have seen major improvements recognised by Ofsted and we are also working with communities to find new ways of running vital services such as libraries, nurseries and youth clubs.

We want someone with the skill and the vision to help lead the way as we continue to reshape the way we work, embrace new technologies and deliver top level services to the people of our city. Our workforce has seen massive changes in recent years, but there are more opportunities and challenges ahead – and this is a chance to be right at the heart of it all.

This is a highly visible role and you’ll need experience of the worlds of HR and local government; the confidence to challenge and be challenged; and the imagination to bring in new solutions and new approaches to innovation and risk. You would bring experience of inclusive change and transformation and the ability to work in partnership with a variety of stakeholders.

Leading a highly professional and dedicated team, you would work with elected members and senior officers to project-manage major workforce initiatives as part of our One Coventry programme and develop an employee and industrial relations policy that ensures we build on our core Council priorities. You’ll need a CV that shows you have the skills, the enthusiasm and the drive to get the job done.

We want our staff to have a voice, to feel valued and to play an active part as we adapt for the future – and we need the right person to help empower them to do that.

In return, you would be joining a local authority that has been shortlisted for the LGC Council of the Year and one where a recent LGA Peer Challenge praised the obvious ‘pride’ of staff in their work and their city.

It’s all part of our work with staff, partners, community organisations and residents – One Coventry!

As a Council we want our workforce to represent the people that we serve and we recognise the value of having a diverse workforce and the variety of skills, knowledge and perspectives that this brings.  As such, we have no pre-conceptions on where the right person for this role comes from, or what they look like and we are committed to making our recruitment practices as inclusive as possible for all.

Company

You will be joining Coventry City Council during an exciting time as we are currently undergoing a number of key programmes of change, including:

Kickstart – a major project that will see the Council move to a new home and new ways of working. By the end of 2017 thousands of staff will have moved out of many of our current offices into the new building at Friargate. It will see staff across the Council working differently with more shared space, new technology, hot-desking and many other changes.

Digital transformation – a number of projects that are using service redesign and technology to improve our customer journeys and the way we provide our services.

A new information management strategy, including how we use and manage information and data, and the use of technology to improve that.

Headed by Chief Executive, Martin Reeves, the Council is committed to improving the quality of life for residents and making Coventry a top 10 city. We’re bringing in new, streamlined ways of working and making more use of technology to deliver services to the people who live and work in our city.

Benefits at Coventry

In return, we can offer you flexible working arrangements that will enhance your work-life balance.  These include working from home (subject to project/service area requirements), flexible working hours, generous holiday allowance (starting at 35 days including bank holidays) and a flexitime scheme.  In addition, we offer a range of staff benefits such as membership of the Local Government contributory pension scheme, childcare vouchers, 'MyCar' scheme, interest-free loans on annual travel cards, discounts at a number of city centre restaurants, shops and other establishments.
