The Head of Human Resources (HHR) is responsible for the operational delivery of HR services to the Geffrye Museum of the Home, and for shaping the museum’s HR strategy in order to realise its objective of being an amazing place to work. The HHR will partner the leadership team and managers across the Geffrye as a true generalist.  The HHR is tasked with attracting, developing, engaging and retaining top talent to ensure the Geffrye fulfils its commercial and academic goals and adheres to its vision, manifesto and values.  It is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in a small organisation at a time of transformational change.

Main Responsibilities

Generalist HR

  • Business Partner to Senior Management Team and Managers across the museum
  • Act as a sounding board and coach to managers: provide them with exceptional HR support, advice, guidance, skills and tools to manage their teams effectively
  • Advise on employee relations issues - ensuring that best practice, legal compliance and policies and procedures are adhered to at all times and, where necessary, using i-Croner and partnering with external employment lawyers.
  • Proactively handle day–to-day operational aspects of HR but also contribute at the strategic level to develop the museum as a leader in modern, innovative working practices and an example for its sector
  • Lead on designated recruitment campaigns, ensuring a well-structured and planned process. Ensure value for money recruitment advertising (web-based) and recruitment agency liaison (if appropriate); lead on optimum use of social media for HR (Twitter, Facebook etc); 
  • Oversee, implement and develop Recruitment Action Plan tool kit to increase the diversity of the workforce; initiate and develop partnerships for apprenticeships, work experience programmes etc.
  • Ensure HR knowledge is kept up-to-date and accurate through regular attendance of employment law and other relevant briefings and conferences, e.g.  CIPD Conference and employment law breakfast updates at law firms.
  • Ensure that Health & Safety policies, procedures and regulations are known, understood and complied with by you, the team and internal and external colleagues and suppliers.
  • Undertake any other duty which may reasonably be allocated by the Director Strategy & Finance

HR Management Information, Reporting and Analysis

  • Act as a Systems Administrator/Super User for the  HR Information System (Breathe); build new and schedule regular HR reports; analyse management information to provide accurate insight into key employee trends as required for different areas of the museum
  • Develop MI reporting and update monthly HR dashboard to support effective decision making by HR and the wider museum
     
  • Act as a primary contact for Breathe data integrity and data queries; audit management information to ensure integrity of data; responsible for maintaining data integrity between and within relevant HR systems
     

Pay and Reward

  • Participate in compensation surveys to collect and analyse competitive salary information
  • Lead on annual salary review process for specific departments; provide information and attend the annual Remuneration Committee
  • Lead on the annual London Living Wage review
  • Implement rigorous succession planning processes at regular intervals
  • Develop and maintain recognition  and annual incentive scheme awards

Learning & Development

  • In conjunction with external Training Consultants, contribute to the development and implementation of new and existing training programmes. Establish a high quality CPD programme within the museum.

Performance Management

  • Oversee approach to performance management, ensuring it remains up to date with latest thinking and appropriate for the organisation;
  • Manage the HR calendar of activities and processes – including the bi-annual performance management and introduce succession planning processes
  • Support managers and staff in ensuring performance is effectively managed, and individuals developed and supported

Engagement and Wellbeing

  • Build upon and oversee successful engagement initiatives. Research initiatives outside of the sector to introduce an innovative wellbeing programme. Ensure that the Geffrye is a truly great place to work and one that staff recommend to others

Diversity and Inclusion

  • Lead on diversity and inclusion, ensuring the museum takes full advantage of apprenticeships, and other opportunities
  • Work closely with our partners (ENEI) and implement the Recruitment Action Plan to improve the diversity of the work force
  • Attend ENEI quarterly meetings to improve knowledge and understanding from other colleagues working on EDI in the sector
  • Create partnerships with local schools and colleges to raise the profile of the museum and encourage applications from their students
  • Create development and progression opportunities for under-represented colleagues at the museum

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  1. Experienced HR generalist, educated to degree level, with postgraduate CIPD qualification and membership.
  2. Experience in cross-functional areas, including Generalist HR, Recruitment, HR systems/information technology, L&D, Engagement and Compensation and Benefits
  3. Previous experience in an analytical HR role, with knowledge of at least one major HRIS. Knowledge of other business intelligence/reporting tools and delivering analytics would be advantageous
  4. Experience of identifying key trends based on employee data point changes and an understanding of HR data points, metrics and definitions
  5. Sound judgement – to know when to use initiative and when to seek assistance from colleagues/legal advisors/Croner-I; able to identify solutions to problems;
  6. Genuinely interested in people; approachable and friendly, calm with a keen sense of fun; able to establish strong and positive relationships with both internal and external colleagues; supportive and encouraging of personal and professional development.
  7. Excellent communicator at all levels; able to deliver complex messages clearly and succinctly with fluency in written English; persuasive and able to influence at all levels; can be direct as well as diplomatic, giving honest and regular feedback
  8. Razor sharp attention to detail is essential; strong presentation skills; fast worker, productive and able to concentrate in an open plan office
  9. Commercially astute, numerate and strong negotiator to ensure best value from suppliers;
  10. Is able to handle confidential matters with utmost discretion
  11. Is able to demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the role that diversity and inclusion play in the activities of the Geffrye as a whole and in the work of this particular job.
