Background

City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

City attracts around 20,000 students (35% postgraduate level) from more than 150 countries and staff from over 75 countries.

In the last REF, City doubled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research.

Led by President, Professor Sir Paul Curran, City has made significant investments in its academic staff, its estate and its infrastructure and continues to work towards realising its vision of being a leading global university: it has recently agreed a new Vision & Strategy 2026. Founded in 1894, City is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

This is an exciting time to join City as a HR Manager as we bring to life City’s People Strategy at a key point in City’s 125th year history.

Responsibilities

This important role is both strategic and delivery focused. As a member of our HR Operations team, you will partner with senior academic and professional services colleagues to deliver the people-related aspects of their strategic plans. In parallel, you will also be responsible for delivering through the team a comprehensive, high quality HR advisory and administrative service.

Your duties will be wide ranging. You will support leaders and managers in facilitating the delivery of people initiatives, including cyclical HR activity such as academic promotions and annual salary review. You will take a positive approach to managing employee relations matters and supporting change, ensuring approaches and solutions are pragmatic, risk-based and consistent with University values. You will also lead and/or contribute to wider projects and activities to support the People Strategy and will share good practice across the HR team and beyond.

Person Specification

We are seeking a skilled and CIPD qualified HR practitioner, experienced in managing a diverse client base in a large, complex organisation. You will have strong verbal communication and relationship-building skills, with credibility to influence at all levels. The successful candidate will also have excellent business writing skills and experience in developing and revising HR policies and procedures. Current employment law knowledge is essential, as is the ability to interpret the law effectively and manage complex employee relations cases, working alongside trade union colleagues. We are seeking a colleague with a positive and flexible approach, who is enthusiastic about working collaboratively as part of a team. Line management experience is desirable.

Additional Information

City offers a sector-leading salary, pension scheme and benefits including a comprehensive package of staff training and development.

The role is available from July 2019.

Closing date for applications: 11.59pm 14th May 2019
