OFFICE FOR STUDENTS

Independent Non-Executive Member, Remuneration and Nominations Committee

Use your knowledge to enhance the student experience

As the independent regulator of higher education in England, the Office for Students’ mission is to ensure that every student, whatever their background, has a fulfilling experience of higher education that enriches their lives and their careers. Committed to providing a high-quality experience for students of all ages, our work impacts on all learning experiences – be that full-time, part-time, undergraduate, postgraduate, national, international, on-campus or remote learning.

In order to achieve our goals, it is imperative that we are able to attract and retain exceptional people to work for us. These people have a direct impact on enriching the lives of England’s students, so we need to ensure that our employment prospect is desirable, and that our pay and rewards are in line with other employers. As a Non-Executive Member of our Remuneration and Nominations Committee, you will be at the heart of this mission. Attending around three meetings per year which will usually be in London, you will guide, challenge and support the team on a variety of interesting issues. This may include anything from our reward policies to issues of diversity and inclusivity, so the challenges will be far-reaching – and they will ultimately determine our pay and people decisions. Contributing to the work of the Committee either via meetings or electronically, you will also attend ad hoc events, using your experience and sector knowledge to further elevate our capabilities.

This is a rare opportunity to explore the CV enhancing potential of a Non-Executive role in a well-respected and welcoming organisation. We do not expect you to have previously undertaken Non-Executive work, but we are looking for someone who has extensive senior-level Human Resources experience (or equivalent). You will need a good knowledge of senior pay issues in either a customer-facing organisation or the public sector, and your understanding of employment law will be complemented by a comprehensive awareness of how to successfully address equality and diversity issues in a high-profile organisation.

As a highly diplomatic individual, you will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to handle sensitive and confidential issues. It would also be useful (though isn’t strictly necessary) if you have previously worked with regulatory bodies, Trade Unions or public domain Remuneration Committees. Likewise, a good grasp of the Higher Education sector, or Government and public sector pay and reward policies would be beneficial, though is not essential.  What is essential is that you are a team-player with a willingness to work in partnership with our supportive team – and that you are keen to help students succeed in life, regardless of their backgrounds.

In the first instance, please email committees@officeforstudents.org.uk to express interest and request an information pack.

Closing date for applications: 2nd June

Interviews will take place on 19th June
