The Diplomatic Academy (DA) was created in February 2015 and leads learning and development in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The DA builds skills, knowledge and expertise, not only for FCO staff, but for all staff across Government who work on international issues. We are a talented group of experts and enthusiasts, boasting cutting-edge facilities in London and across the globe. Our mission is to help colleagues improve their ways of working and develop their careers in a constantly-changing world. We need an inspirational, multi-talented L&D leader to join our senior leadership team to help spearhead these efforts, expand our capabilities and bring the best learning and development to the FCO network

Now is an exciting time to join the DA. With Britain’s exit from the EU on the horizon, L&D has become a top priority for the FCO and across HM Government. As Head of Learning, you will be our senior L&D professional (amongst a group of talented L&D professionals within the global Diplomatic Academy) championing the highest standards of L&D professionalism across the Academy. Bridging the DA and FCO directorates in London, you’ll be liaising with senior leaders to identify learning and development needs and build capability. Alongside providing L&D consultancy to a range of partners, you will also promote digital L&D innovation and embed a stronger learning culture. This is a challenging role that provides an excellent opportunity to shape a high-profile organisation.

Using your strong interpersonal skills you will confidently engage stakeholders and make a positive impact at a senior levels. Being able to make your mark, to influence others and bring them along with you is a crucial part of the role, as you will need to establish a reputation as a trusted and indispensable adviser in an environment where L&D can sometimes be regarded as an optional extra. The role also presents ever-changing challenges as the DA continues to mature, so an adaptable and flexible approach is key.

You will need significant experience in an L&D environment, either in the public or private sector, along with experience as a Senior Learning (L&D) Business Partner.

An able project manager, you will be comfortable creating effective and pragmatic learning strategies, delivering and evaluating them as needed drawing on your strong L&D design, facilitation and programme evaluation skills. You will also be able to skilfully coach and mentor others.

You will hold a post-graduate level qualification in L&D and be a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

You must be a British Citizen at the time of application. Security clearance is also a condition of your appointment.

Everyone at the DA and FCO is also encouraged to develop their own their skills and capabilities. You will have access to support and resources from high quality providers as well as mentors and coaches. In terms of other benefits, we offer flexible working alongside generous annual leave, a Civil Service pension, staff bonuses and recognition, childcare support and an employee assistance programme.
