Marylebone Boys’ School is a free school trust in Paddington. The school aspires to be academically rigorous with an emphasis on good behaviour, commitment to learning and outstanding teaching, where knowledge is valued and available to all who are prepared to work for it. The motto is “studio et industria”, which can be translated as “through application and hard work”. The trust is recruiting one non-executive director/trustee to drive forward the strategic leadership and talent management needed to achieve its aspirations.

About the trust

Opened in 2014 the school has been in its permanent home September 2018 in the heart of the prestigious Paddington Basin area and where the students have access to brand new, purpose built facilities. The school has developed a well-rounded curriculum to ensure that all boys make outstanding progress.

MBS benefits from a wide variety of boys from different cultures and backgrounds and its team works tirelessly to ensure that boys feel proud of their school, achieve broadly, are safe, secure and feel valued in the school community. At Marylebone Boys’ School the pastoral system engenders an environment where boys can and do excel. The school was inspected by Ofsted in May 2017 and was rated Good: “Leaders, staff and governors are turning their vision and ambition into a reality. They have created a successful school where pupils are taught well and make good progress. The school community is a happy one. Staff are proud to work at the school. Pupils are safe, get on well with each other, and treat each other with respect and tolerance.”

Plans for the future

The key challenges for the next 12 months are to:

  1. Increase student numbers: the Pupil Admission Number (PAN) increased from 120 to 150 in Sept 2019 I The school needs to ensure it is seen as the first choice for all boys in the local area.
  2. Retain the outstanding teaching staff: all schools in London will confirm that staff recruitment and retention is one of their key challenges. The school has successfully recruited an excellent team of staff and seeks to ensure that its culture and environment promotes high levels of staff retention.
  3. Develop a highly successful Sixth Form: with the completion of the building project, the school has opened an academic co-educational Sixth Form. Through the delivery of outstanding teaching and achievement of positive value-added results, the school intends to attract students from across London to join the current boys in securing places at top universities.

Role summary Number of positions advertised: 1 Trustee/Non-Executive Director (Leadership and talent management)

The trustees are seeking to recruit a non-executive director who brings a wealth of leadership expertise from the business world, who will have the expertise to support and challenge the highly skilled executive leadership team. It is the trustees‘ intention to make MBS the school of choice for staff as well as students. The appointed trustee will have a track record of successfully delivering high levels of retention, particularly of high performing staff. 

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse.

The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law.

In the interests of safeguarding, all trustee appointments would be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

Governance structure


Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 832 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
