The British Liver Trust is looking for 2 new Trustees to join our Board.

Our Trustees play a pivotal role in providing governance and guidance to ensure we are delivering for people with liver disease and liver cancer. They are involved in setting the strategic direction of our organisation, as well as holding the senior management team to account.  The trustees work closely as a team with the senior management team of the charity, playing an active role advising and mentoring as required.

The British Liver Trust is a small charity with big ambitions. We want liver disease to have the same profile and awareness as the other big killer diseases such as heart disease, stroke and cancer.   

We are looking to recruit 2 trustees to help us grow and develop to meet this challenge, one HR professional and one communications professional.

We currently have 4 Board meetings a year, usually either in London or virtually, with one meeting (COVID allowing) in our Bournemouth national HQ. Trustees would be asked to sit on a Board sub-committee relevant to their skill set.

As we grow as a charity we recognise that additional HR expertise will be essential, to support our Director of Finance and Operations and to help maintain a highly motivated workforce, which includes volunteers. Experience in a volunteering, health or care environment would be very helpful but is not essential. What is much more important is senior level HR knowledge and a desire to make a significant difference to the leading patient charity for those with liver disease or liver cancer.

We also need a Trustee with senior communications and marketing expertise and ideally agency contacts, who is able to provide high-level strategic advice and provide support when needed to the Director of Communication and Policy and their team. We think you will be already acting as a Comms and Marketing Director in an agency, large company, or health sector government position, or perhaps an MD or CEO with a strong knowledge and experience of Communications. We would also hope you could:

  • Act as a sounding board for the senior management team and communications teams, advising on matters such as the development of the market position and brand of the charity and marketing and communications strategies
  • Support the trustees and staff to recognise external communications opportunities and solutions, and support staff to define and execute appropriate strategies
  • Provide crisis communications support if needed

The Board is currently looking to increase diversity amongst our Board members and ensure that we more accurately reflect the population at large and the communities we serve. We also welcome applications from people who have personal experience of liver disease.
