Head of Employment Relations

We are looking for a Head of Employment Relations to join our People Services team. This is a new role in the department and you will help shape the future of how we collaborate with and influence leaders across the University, to enhance the employment relations environment and proactively develop and build policy and people management best practices.

You will embrace change and be confident influencing senior stakeholders to help create an amazing place to work for all. You will be an expert in the field of employment relations and provide specialist support to address complex people issues and ensure harmonious employee relations. Your portfolio will include complex casework, employment law, policy and procedure, trade union engagement and involvement in pay and reward matters.
What you will do:
- Provide adaptive and effective leadership and direction in relation to the development of employment policy products and proactive and reactive casework support across the University.
- Maintain and develop effective, trusted and collaborative relationships with key stakeholders including trade unions, People Services colleagues and leaders.
- Act as a point of escalation in respect of employment relations/casework matters.
- Support organisational transformation from an employment relations perspective, developing the Employment Relations Strategy to ensure that our relationships with trade union colleagues are effective partnerships; and providing expert knowledge, insight and guidance.
- Coach, guide and advise colleagues/senior leaders in relation to complex and contentious casework matters, including appropriate interventions.
- Ensure that standard work practices are documented and well known by the People Operations team, coaching and delivering training sessions as appropriate.
- Support the undertaking of investigations, hearings, appeals, employment tribunal claims.
- Lead, mentor and build organisational capability relating to employment relations.
- Feed insights and observations to senior managers and HR Business Partners so they are able to influence strategic organisational change and policy development.
- Participate in wider PS projects and activity across the People Services function where required.

What you will bring:
- A wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, as well as an expert understanding of current employment (including TUPE) and data protection legislation and its practical application, with a strong awareness of future developments to employment legislation and professional developments in relation to people management good practice.
- An ability to share and communicate complex employee relations matters, ideas and good practice to the wider People Services team and wider stakeholders.
- Experience of effective trade union engagement in an ER context with experience of working in a highly unionised environment.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate contentious and difficult messages clearly to a varied audience.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to engage positively with a wide range of groups and receive feedback.
- Professional credibility with proven experience of advising at senior level on multiple, difficult, sensitive ER issues and ones that require change across the organisation.
- Action oriented and results driven, ability to identify key outcomes and measures in the management of work programs to deliver excellence with wealth of experience in delivering evidence-based outcomes.
What you will have:
- CIPD qualification; level 7 / Advanced
- CIPD membership; Chartered / Fellow
- Coaching qualification at Level 5 is desirable but not essential
