The HR department at the British Museum is evolving. We are introducing a business partnering model to enable the provision of strategic and operational HR advice to the leadership and management teams of the British Museum and British Museum Company Ltd.

We are looking for a HR Business Partner and two HR Advisors to help us meet some newly identified aims for HR and to support the development and implementation of our HR strategy.

Our Business Partner will lead a small sub team within our HR Operations function; one team supporting our Operations Directorate and the other supporting our Collection and Public Engagement Directorate and the British Museum Company.

About the role

Our HR Business Partners will be responsible for consistent casework management, delivering resolutions to complex HR problems, overseeing resourcing processes from design to delivery and supporting the effective management of change, all within the relevant business area. They will also have responsibility for maintaining and developing HR policy, processes and procedures and ensuring that those are consistently applied.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Supporting the design, delivery and evaluation of the HR strategy.
  • Developing a thorough understanding of the strategic and operational people issues in the relevant business area and working proactively with managers to support the delivery of local plans.
  • Analysing and interpreting relevant HR management information and presenting to senior managers and leaders within the relevant business area to enable good decision making.
  • Leading the development of HR policies and procedures and ensure they remain up to date and relevant in line with legislative and organisational requirements, as well as with best practice. Monitor compliance with those policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing employee relations casework as appropriate and in line with Museum policies, procedures and best practice.
  • Leading on the management and resolution of more complex casework, assessing risk, devising appropriate case management strategies and seeking advice as appropriate. 
  • Supporting role design and undertake role evaluation, ensuring that legal, organisational and financial procedures are followed.
  • Supporting the delivery of organisational change projects (restructures, redundancies, TUPE etc.)
  • Providing line management, performance appraisal and development opportunities for own sub-team.

About you:

As one of our Business Partners you will be CIPD qualified (or have equivalent experience) and you’ll have an up-to-date working knowledge of current employment law and HR best practice. You will be able to show how you have applied your knowledge, skills and experience flexibly to resolve problems, to inform decision making and to manage and mitigate risk. You will be a strong communicator with the ability to convey complex messages effectively and to influence at all levels. With a careful attention to detail you will also be able to demonstrate your experience of processing, analysing and presenting complex data.
