The University of Manchester has a rich heritage of discovery, social change and a pioneering spirit which has been at the heart of what we do since 1824.  When you join our University, you become part of a truly diverse and global community of staff and students all focused on ensuring we are recognised globally for the excellence of our people, research, learning and innovation, and for the benefits we bring to society. In an increasingly competitive and challenging environment, how we recruit, retain and develop our people has never been more important.

In recognition that the University’s people are its greatest asset and of the need for a heightened strategic focus on organisational and work design, the University has taken the decision to re-purpose its previous HR Director role into a Director of People and Organisational Development.  This represents a positive change for the University and one that emphasises the strategic importance of the People Director role in influencing and shaping our future and helping differentiate the Institution from its competitors on a national and international basis.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of People and Organisational Development will be responsible for ensuring our people and OD strategies and approaches enable a high performing, agile and engaged workforce and facilitate transformational change across the University.  You will play a critical role in shaping the institution as well as creating a vision for and shaping the contribution of the People and OD teams to ensure the delivery of our strategic vision.  Of immediate importance will be supporting the University’s return to campus and navigating the challenges and opportunities that this will present.

You must have significant strategic people and OD experience that blends advocacy, authentic leadership and proven ability to deliver strategic transformational change, gained in a large, complex and Unionised organisational context.  You will also be able to evidence success in shaping the delivery of people and OD services to ensure efficient and progressive approaches. In such a multi-layered, multi-faceted and multi-stakeholder setting, key to your success will be your professional judgement, insight and ability to influence strategic direction.

You will act at all times in line with our values and demonstrate commitment to equality and diversity and the ongoing development of an inclusive culture.
