Head of Diversity & Inclusion
£60k + benefits

For nearly 70 years, Samaritans has been standing with some of the most vulnerable people across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Our purpose is to reduce the number of people who die by suicide, and we’re proud of the role we play in influencing suicide prevention policy and practice. With 20,000+ volunteers based in 201 branches, we answer a call for help every six seconds, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. These dedicated volunteers are supported by a team of around 250 employees. Our service is built on a strong framework of values, and we constantly strive to be better tomorrow than we are today. At the heart of this is our commitment to developing a rich and creative culture of diversity and inclusion, underpinned by policies and behaviours that are meaningful, practical and equitable.

You’ll lead positive, appreciative change across the Samaritans family: first developing and sharing a collaborative approach to diversity and inclusion, and then working closely with staff and volunteer colleagues across the network to shape and embed this fundamental agenda. It’s an exceptional opportunity to bring your experience, expertise and skilled change practice to a charity which acts with integrity, and which has a clear understanding of how important this transformation will be for us. You’ll have the full support of our board, CEO and leadership group, and you’ll relish the chance to work with the many thousands of people who work to fulfil our vocation.

Candidates must bring extensive experience of developing and delivering diversity and inclusion strategy, and will be adroit leaders of enduring system change. A sophisticated grasp of how to work through influence and engagement will be absolutely essential; we are emphatically not an organisation which works through hierarchy or simple fiat. Comprehensive technical knowledge of legislation and guidelines will be complemented by an easy fluency with concepts of power, privilege, unconscious bias and intersectional injustice. Your track record needs to demonstrate how your high levels of emotional intelligence have inspired colleagues to adopt and embody new behaviours and expectations.

Samaritans recognises the enormous benefits and the social justice imperatives of ensuring diversity at every level of our organisation. We actively encourage applications from the widest possible range of backgrounds and experiences, and particularly from Black or minoritised ethnic candidates. We are dedicated to making reasonable adjustments to support candidates throughout our recruitment process.
