John Taylor and Birmingham St Mary’s Hospices have a rich and long history of been the principal providers of specialist palliative and end of life care across Birmingham. They are keen for all people across Birmingham to have access to the best palliative end of life care possible. The hospices are working closely with the NHS partners to rise to the challenge of meeting the needs of a diverse community of people across the city. They feel the best way to build on what has been achieved already is to recruit and retain the best people within this community.
The foundations have been laid by bringing both organisations together as one, this process will have been completed by the 1st of August 2021. In preparation for this a new CEO and executive management team have been appointed who will lead these two trusted brands together as one, with one single model of care, community, and inpatient units, one in Selly Park and one in Erdington. This means that no matter where people live, they will have access to high quality palliative care. As one integrated organisation this means they will be able to meet the growing needs of Birmingham and respond quicker to the changing landscape of healthcare in the future. They will also be more financially resilient and better able to attract income from NHS commissioners and hospice providers. Their aim is to find effective ways of recruiting and retaining staff from the great people across the city of Birmingham. In September they will be developing their new strategy, whilst working with colleagues to identify new values and behaviours to shape this new organisation.
Your new role
Due to the merger, they are appointing a new of Director of People and Culture. They are keen to find someone who is a strong leader and manager who understands people, can listen effectively to their needs and who can embrace and implement new approaches and ideas. They are looking for someone who truly believes and understands the need to build a diverse and inclusive workforce. You will be responsible for the People team lead who will then have 6 direct reports. You will be responsible for maximising the talents of the people and support development across both organisations to achieve the organisations objectives. You will need to engage and partner with everyone in the business to embed their organisational values and create a brilliant experience for all employees and volunteers so that everyone is working to their best potential. You will lead on all people practices which includes policies and programmes and be developing a culture of support and empowerment across the organisation. This will include leading on all areas of HR, Learning and development, talent development, culture, diversity and inclusion and volunteering development. You will also be a key advisor to the CEO and Senior Executive Team along with the board of trustees. You will be involved with these key stakeholders across the organisation to help implement and build a strategic plan across the organisation ensuring that all project work and development continues through implementation and management of strategic operating plans and budgets.
What you will need to be successful
You will need to have a track record in leading change and working with partner organisations to shape workforces. Ideally you will have helped another similar organisation to implement effective approaches to both diversity and inclusion. You must be passionate about building a workforce that represents the diversity of the Birmingham community. You will need to have worked at this level previously and be highly experienced in transformation, change management, ED&I and dealing with stakeholders of all levels. If you have prior experience within the healthcare or public sector fields this would be a bonus but is not essential.
