This is a fantastic opportunity to work in the largest Civil Service Department that touches the lives of citizens across the breadth of the UK. What we do matters. We serve over 22 million customers a year - we keep children out of poverty; we help people without jobs to find work so that they can support themselves and their families; we ensure the most vulnerable in society are protected.

The last 15 months have been challenging ones, but the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has played a huge part in supporting the Government’s response, and has been at the heart of supporting those who are most vulnerable and affected by the crisis. DWP delivered a range of measures through the welfare system amounting to £9.3bn of additional support.

The Director of Capability, Learning and Talent is one of eight Directors reporting to the Director General, People, Capability and Place and leads a team of over 900 colleagues who are right at the heart of enabling DWP to meet its demanding priorities in the short, medium and longer term. Accountable for integrating technical, professional and personal learning across DWP to deliver a coherent learning offer as part of our capability improvement strategy, promoting team learning and leadership development and enabling greater business flexibility, this role leads a capability portfolio of a scale with few comparators elsewhere in the economy.

As one of the largest employers of civil servants across Government, this role will also be influential in standard setting for capability, particularly in operational service delivery, for the whole of Government.

The challenges are unprecedented and need to be met at pace.  This role calls for someone who will share the Department’s ambition to build a reputation as an organisation where colleagues thrive and which is flexible, inclusive, and continuously learning.  You will be a senior HR leader with a track record of moving the dial on capability in a large and complex organisation. You may have had capability as part of your portfolio, or it may already be your chosen specialism, what matters is that you have passion for this portfolio and the credibility in this space to inspire and lead a large staff team of committed professionals working at pace in a changing landscape.

The mission of DWP, the value it adds to society and the sheer scale and ambition of the People, Capability and Place Group mean this has the potential to be a career defining role for the right candidate. If you are excited by the scale of challenge of the here and now, and the opportunity to shape our strategic plans going forward, then we would encourage you to apply.

This opportunity provides a great chance to make a positive impact and deliver tangible benefits to make a real difference to people.  Please contact Julie Myers on julie.myers@gatenbysanderson.com or Mark Turner on mark.turner@gatenbysanderson.com, at our recruitment partners GatenbySanderson for an informal discussion.
