Sustrans is the UK charity making it easier for people to walk and cycle. We connect people and places, create liveable neighbourhoods, act as custodians of the National Cycle Network, transform the school run and encourage happier, healthier and more active travel.

Our vision and mission have never been more relevant.

Across the UK, governments are pledging investment and action on clean air and active travel. We are working together to make a real difference - creating paths where people can walk, cycle and wheel and places where everyone can live and travel happily and healthily, and where nobody is excluded.

With a turnover of £100m, our work wouldn’t be possible without the commitment and dedication of our 725 employees, 3,500 volunteers and 40,000 supporters.

Sustrans is a positive, friendly, engaging and ambitious place to work. With a response rate of 92% in our last annual employee survey, we have an employee net promoter score in the top 20% of all UK employers.

Join Sustrans today and help us get things done, together.

About the Role

At Sustrans, our values underpin everything we do. And the people that form our organisation are unique, committed and energised about making a difference to the places in which we live, work and travel across the UK.

We now have a rare opportunity for you to join us and lead our people operations team, in the newly created role of Director of People Operations. Reporting to the Executive Director of People & OD and as a member of our UK Directors’ Group, you will play a key leadership role in creating, shaping and delivering a work programme to improve our operating model, transforming and strengthening the people operations function.

Under your leadership, you will ensure that your team and our services operate in accordance with contemporary best HR practice and employment legislation whilst supporting the delivery of the People & OD business plan.

About You

You will be someone who gets things done, who acts strategically and creatively and who inspires others as an accomplished influencer and coach. You will have business acumen, a commitment to inclusion and diversity and exceptional engagement, involvement and communication skills.

You will have experience of managing a HR function and a successful track record in accurate and timely operational HR management, programme management, process improvement and policy development.

If this is you and, just like Sustrans, you want to make a difference, we would love to hear from you!

What can we offer?

Career development, Wellbeing and Financial benefits.

This is a fantastic opportunity to make your mark and develop your leadership credentials. You will receive coaching from an highly experienced executive director and the opportunity to work with a wide range of subject matter experts.

Base

You can be based anywhere in the UK and most of your work can be done from home. Occasional travel to Sustrans UK offices will be required, including to our hub in central Bristol when it opens after a major refurbishment in late 2021. Good access to a mainline train station will be helpful.
