Job Details

Our research shows that 43% of young people feel the pandemic has harmed their long-term career prospects. At the CIPD, we are committed to creating opportunities for young people – and you can help.

We need professionals to help schools and colleges develop inclusive careers programmes.

Providing careers education in schools and colleges is essential to help students regain confidence in their future. More than ever, they need help to understand the opportunities available and how to access them.

The CIPD has partnered with the Careers & Enterprise Company to inspire and prepare young people for the fast-changing world of work. The Enterprise Adviser role will see you offer strategic support from your wealth of knowledge and experience in business to ensure an effective careers education programme exists within your matched school, or college. This role will focus on schools with specialist provision to support young people with special educational needs, helping to make a difference to some of our most vulnerable young people.

How can I help?

Volunteering as an Enterprise Adviser you will work directly with school leadership teams to help them develop a valuable careers programme and raise the aspirations of young people. You will also work to create connections between schools and local employers, to bring the world of work to life for students.

'This ground-up approach to careers has afforded me an opportunity to become involved in partnering both education and business to help create greater understanding and opportunities for young people entering our future workforce.

It enables a chance to input at an early stage to the local and national economy and skills agenda. As well as, to help build strong, inclusive and robust talent pipelines equipped with the skills required to make a valuable difference to some of our most pressing employment challenges today.' Sarah, an Enterprise Adviser volunteer

Each school / setting will be slightly different but broadly speaking the role will include:

  • Support a school senior leadership team strategically to develop and evaluate their careers plan to ensure it addresses the needs of ALL young people.
  • Provide a valuable employer's perspective on how a school can embed labour market information and opportunities into the careers programme.
  • Engage with local businesses and employers in your network to put a wide variety of careers opportunities at the heart of young people's education

In addition to the activities listed above that you will be involved in, you will also be required in specialist schools to tailor approaches to match the school context and ensure the Careers Strategy and plans are aspirational, creating a roadmap to the students’ potential career outcomes.

What skills and experience do you need?

  • A business professional who comes from any industry sector or professional background, be that employed, self-employed or recently employed.
  • Dedicated to making a lasting impact on the future outcomes of young people particularly with additional needs.
  • Willing to volunteer their time to achieve positive change in local schools using core skills including relationship building and being analytical.

What Support is provided?

  • Comprehensive induction and training
  • Multiple Toolkits and resources to help map out a range of programmes
  • Support from an Enterprise Coordinator who will work with you and your school to ensure everyone is happy and progress is being made
