This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a qualified HR professional to join a small and established multi-disciplined team working on an international basis. You will provide a high level of policy research, development and support on employment related matters across the international shipping sector at a time of significant change.
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the global trade association for the maritime transport sector which moves about 90% of world trade. ICS works closely with its membership of global national shipowners' associations whose member shipping companies operate over 80% of the world's merchant tonnage. Established in 1921, ICS handles all regulatory and trade policy issues that may affect international shipping, representing the industry at various intergovernmental bodies including the London-based UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva. The whole maritime industry is going through transformational change as the sector begins to recover from COVID-19 and to decarbonize. ICS is at the forefront of this.
The Role: You will support the work of the ICS Employment Affairs Director and Labour Affairs Committee, which co-ordinates the development of the global industry’s positions on employment related issues and their representation at external meetings at bodies such as the ILO, IMO and WHO. The role may involve some international travel.
Current key topic areas include the welfare and health and safety for seafarers in the continuing Covid-19 global environment and developing strategies and approaches to promote and increase diversity and inclusion across the international shipping industry.
You will work closely with the Director for Employment Affairs on a daily basis. Your role will involve preparation of documents, industry positions, assistance with research activities and report writing. You will also provide general support on a wide range of HR policy related issues and in discussions with the Trades Unions represented by the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF). In due course this work may involve some international travel.
About You:
You will ideally be a fully qualified Level 5 (or in the final stages of study) CIPD member with a relevant business degree, excellent research, writing and communication skills together with a keen interest in international employment affairs.
In particular, you will have experience of and a passion for researching, drafting and developing policy. You will also have worked in an environment where you have been involved in stakeholder or union-based consultation or negotiations. You will have the ability to put forward and explain complex arguments clearly and concisely, and a willingness to present arguments when required.
You will be comfortable with understanding a wide range of political, commercial and occasionally technical or operational issues quickly, with a sound HR approach based around people, welfare and safety. As part of this you will be highly IT and computer literate as well as being competent with basic statistics and data analysis. A second language, whilst not essential, would be advantageous.
About ICS:
The small and highly dedicated Secretariat team at ICS are returning to office-based working on a hybrid basis. ICS has recently moved into a brand new very modern office space based in Seething Lane in the City of London.
In this role you can expect to work in the office for two/ three days a week on a flexible basis, combined with home working for the rest of the time. There is an excellent range of additional benefits and a great team culture. As well growing and bringing in new talent over the last year, there is excellent longevity across the whole team.
