The Department of Justice has overall responsibility for public policy and administration in respect of criminal justice, public safety, civil and family law, national security, immigration and data protection issues. The Department employs over 2,700 people directly and has responsibility for the Justice sector, with overall 25,000 staff and a budget of €3 billion.

The Civil Justice Governance function has oversight responsibility for the agencies and bodies under the aegis of the Civil Justice pillar of the Department, including key independent national agencies such as the Courts Service and the Data Protection Commission.  It is also a key support to the effective functioning of the judiciary.

Reporting to the Deputy Secretary, the Head of Civil Governance is responsible for overseeing the operation of the Governance function.  The person will be a key member of the Department’s senior leadership team, contributing to defining the overall mission and strategic goals of the Department.

The person appointed will have:

  • A proven record of accomplishment as a leader and senior manager leading teams in a large or complex organisation
  • Knowledge of, or capacity to acquire quickly, a robust understanding of corporate governance and human resource standards 
  • A proven track record in effective interpersonal skills, managing relationships, winning people over in a change environment and providing developmental leadership and managing for results
  • Knowledge of, or capacity to acquire quickly, a broad understanding of the Department’s wide range of responsibilities at national and international level, and the individual circumstances of individual civil justice agencies
  • An ability to deal effectively at the highest level with the Minister for Justice and senior members of the Government, heads of agencies and other Government Departments/bodies
