A new organisation with big ambitions

Buckinghamshire Council was formed on 1st April 2020 as a new Unitary Authority building on the strong track record of the four predecessor districts and the county council. Our new organisation provides an exciting opportunity for innovation and transformation in the way we provide and deliver services for our residents, communities, and businesses.  Not only are we one of the biggest local authorities in the UK, but we are also part of a network of partners spanning both public, third and private sectors, Buckinghamshire NHS Trust, the Clare Foundation, Pinewood Studios to name but a few… we are an outward looking and progressive, new Council with big ambitions…

Everything we want to achieve depends on having great people in place and we are now looking to recruit a new Service Director for HR & OD to lead, inspire and innovate.

Reporting to the Corporate Director of Resources, the role is a critical part of the council’s senior leadership team and as such will work closely with our Chief Executive and Corporate Directors as well as Trade unions, external partners and politicians. We are looking for an experienced and forward-thinking HR leader with substantial senior experience in driving transformational change, developing and delivering effective People and OD strategies and leadership of a high performing HR service. With a proven track record in improving people and business performance in a large, diverse organisation, you will be a strategic and innovative thinker and someone who has the credibility and gravitas to work collaboratively with senior leaders, our partners and stakeholders

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and developing the full range of HR and OD services with approximately 100 officers and the comprehensive provision of HR support and advice to Members and senior managers within our organisation of over 4,000 employees.  

This is an exciting time for a new Service Director to be joining the Council to help shape our future and, building on the foundations already in place.  A key part of the role will be leading the HR service review so that the Council has an HR&OD service with the capability to deliver against the corporate plan.  You will also play a pivotal role in leading organisational transformation across the organisation as we deliver our Better Buckinghamshire programme.  This is not a typical local authority job and as such we would very much welcome candidates with a breadth of sector experience.
