The Metropolitan Police Service (The Met) is the biggest police service in the UK ensuring the safety and security of a thriving economic, cultural and technological capital. London’s growing and ever-changing population of over 9 million is a wonderfully diverse and multicultural mix with 200 different languages spoken. And as one of the most visited cities in the world, London swells even further by an influx of daily commuters, tourists and visitors throughout the year. Ensuring the safety of London’s population and meeting the needs of each of these communities is a hugely complex and challenging task. It is the role of Met’s 45,000 Warranted Officers, Community Support Officers, Special Constables and Support Staff to ensure that communities across one of the world’s premier cities are safe as they go about their business, whether at home, at work or visiting.
How the Met operates has changed significantly in recent years, achieving a step change in effectiveness, efficiency and confidence. But the scale of ambition for the future is even greater and is reliant on how the Met supports and grows the capability of its people. This is why the Met is now seeking an outstanding individual to join them in the role of Career Development Strategy Lead.
As Career Development Strategy Lead, you’ll lead a team of professionals within the Leadership, Inclusion and Talent Centre of HR Expertise and play a key role as part of the LIT senior leadership team in defining the Met’s strategic approach and plan for retaining and managing the careers and performance of its 45,000 people. You’ll work towards the Met’s aspiration to be the employer of choice in London through developing new thinking and approaches to promotion, performance and talent schemes. You will also link into the wider work to build a workforce that reflects the diversity of London through the Met’s diversity and inclusion strategy STRIDE.
As an accomplished People professional and highly credible leader, mentor and coach, ideally with a background in Organisational Psychology, you will be a conceptual thinker with a strong track record of designing and developing high impact approaches for career development, career management, performance and learning. Adept at overseeing a multi-project portfolio of career development, performance and promotion projects within a large organisation, you’ll draw upon your expert analysis, diagnostic, influencing and facilitation skills to identify opportunities for change that give people across the Met the tools, knowledge and skills they need to do their role to the best of their ability. You will also bring a research and evidence-based approach and an appetite and enthusiasm for change and new ways of working to quickly establish yourself as an assured and valued subject matter expert with a wide range of senior stakeholders.
Working in HR in the Met is a hugely rewarding experience, but also a challenging one. The Met’s HR teams are in high demand and you’ll need to demonstrate that you can adapt to, and navigate this complex and high demand environment, with confidence and flexibility.
By joining the Metropolitan Police Service, you will be helping to protect the lives of London’s communities. There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing that your efforts are having an impact on such a large and diverse community.
