Director of People, Culture and Inclusion
£78k / £74 regional • flexible base, with regular meetings in London

From local and national support services to green spaces, sports clubs, museums and the arts, voluntary organisations and volunteers are a vital part of communities across the country. As the membership community for charities and voluntary organisations, NCVO has championed volunteers and the voluntary sector for over a hundred years. Our diverse and growing membership totals over 17,000 organisations. We have around 80 staff and income of more than £7 million per year. With our members at the heart of everything we do, our mission is to unite to champion the remarkable role of charities and volunteers. Because stronger charities make for stronger communities.

A year into our new strategy, and two years since our independent equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) report was produced, NCVO has been through a period of much-needed change, challenge, and reflection. We are now in a strong position to focus on the future under the leadership of our recently appointed chief executive and guided by our values of open, inclusive, collaborative and ambitious. However, we are not complacent. Deep cultural change takes many years. We are determined to go the distance in transforming our organisation, to ensure that NCVO is in a position to be relevant and impactful for the next one hundred years.

This new role will see you work closely alongside the CEO to continue to deliver and embed the cultural change that provides the foundation for delivering our organisational strategy. Your early priorities will be to develop a comprehensive people strategy that builds on what we have delivered through our culture change roadmap over the last 18 months. This will include embedding our values into everything we do at NCVO, engaging employees in a hybrid working environment, and creating a learning organisation. Most important of all will be ensuring people can thrive in their roles so they can deliver the most impact for our members. Of course, overseeing the highly motivated team delivering day to day HR processes and systems work will also come under your remit, as will working closely with our recognised trade union Unite and our active staff networks.

Candidates need to be exceptional HR and OD practitioners, with an impressive track record of leaving organisations stronger and more ambitious than you found them. You must have a sophisticated grasp of culture strategy, but also be a skilled, practical change-agent and leader who can inspire positive, engaged transformation at all levels. Experience of working with colleagues who bring very high levels of subject expertise would be a distinct advantage. You should be comfortable operating as part of a highly collaborative senior team, while also holding a mirror up to the leadership team to support inclusive, authentic leadership practice. Finally, the sector looks to us to walk the walk on collaborative, inclusive cultures, but there is also a role for us in talking the talk by sharing our experiences and contributing to driving culture change on a whole-sector basis; you will see the value in, and relish, both the internal and external aspect to the role.
