Job description

Job Purpose

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity (RMCC) raises money solely to support The Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer centre. We ensure our nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life-saving treatments, which are used across the UK and around the world. From funding state-of-the-art equipment and ground-breaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, we exist to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

This is an opportune time to join the Charity as it embarks on a new strategic period, which will see the Charity close the Oak Cancer Centre appeal and launch a new and ambitious fundraising appeal. The Oak Cancer Centre appeal, was the charity’s largest ever capital appeal, raising £70 million to build a state-of-the-art new cancer centre at our Sutton site, that will provide radical new solutions for the research and treatment of cancer.

By our very nature any role at RMCC is varied, fast paced and challenging. We set ambitious targets for what we as a Charity can achieve, and for ourselves individually. As the Head of HR, you will be no different. This is a newly created position, and you will therefore have the scope to shape it from day one.

The role has three core areas of responsibility:

  • Day-to-day HR management and oversight, including HR policies, D&I and staff surveys.
  • The design and implementation of a Charity wide learning and development programme that works in partnership with and compliments the Trust offering, however also delivers on the sector specific needs of a high performing fundraising organisation.
  • Act as a strategic business partner to other senior leaders, adapting to the needs of the Charity and its staff to find new ways to attract, develop, reward and retain our talent.

This role will also be expected to work in partnership with colleagues in the hospital’s HR team as Organisational Development, Employee Relations and reward schemes will continue to be supported by the hospital’s HR department.

The Head of HR role is offered as a part-time position and will manage the full-time HR Officer, already in post. The weekly time commitment will depend on the candidate and may be able to flex as HR demands change and projects progress.

Key areas of responsibility


  • Form and maintain excellent working relationships with the SLT and other Heads, providing insights to inform decision making and drive performance.
  • Play an active and visible role as a senior leader of the Charity.
  • Inspire and develop the HR Officer to deliver exceptional performance and maximise their personal potential.
  • Lead the Diversity & Inclusion workstream ensuring a continued positive working culture and that our ways of working are upheld.


  • Lead all HR activity including the Charity’s HR system (SelectHR), pay and performance review, reporting and analysis.
  • In close collaboration with the hospital HR team, ensure the smooth and effective delivery of all HR functions.
  • Maintain a good knowledge of employment law and best practice, while managing regular policy and/or process updates.
  • Deliver practical day-to-day HR advice that fits the business and is not ‘over engineered’.

Organisational Development

  • Shape the development and delivery of a first-class L&D strategy and programme, that is an integral part of the benefits package of the Charity.
  • Create a self-supporting coaching culture where managers and leaders, regardless of seniority, engage across teams to independently problem solve.
  • Undertake the annual training needs analysis that informs annual L&D plans at an organisational, team and individual level, ensuring follow through on all L&D needs and continuous monitoring and review.
  • Lead the delivery of annual staff surveys and the development of workstreams to support positive organisational development in response to results.

Strategic Business Partner

  • Coach and provide feedback to key stakeholders to help improve business efficiency.
  • Take the lead on key new HR initiatives, including generating new projects based on the particular demands of the Charity.
  • Constantly strive for value for money and greater efficiency; advise on the best use of available budget and contribute to the annual expenditure budget planning process.

Any other duties as required, consistent with the grade and nature of the post.

Experience Required:

  • Ideally CIPD qualified
  • Extensive and demonstrable experience of business partnering at a senior level, providing pragmatic strategies and solutions in response to organisational demands
  • Track record of board reporting and working effectively at SLT level
  • Excellent knowledge and competency in the fundamentals of HR – Reward, Recruitment & Selection, OD, L&D, D&I etc.
  • Ability to proactively build relationships using a coaching style, build networks quickly and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to work independently by setting their own work priorities in collaboration with the wider organisation
  • Ability to manage high volumes of varied work and operating to tight deadlines
  • A comprehensive understanding of best practice in HR and Organisational Development
