Founded in 1907, Imperial is one of the world’s great universities, renowned for ground-breaking research, a highly talented community of staff, students and alumni, and international reach. Our mission is to achieve enduring excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine, and business, for the benefit of society.
Our new strategy, Science for Humanity, is ambitious and seeks to maximise Imperial’s potential as a force for good in the world. Our Imperial Class of 2030 programme will nurture the most talented, enterprising and diverse graduating class we have ever served; the next phase of our White City Deep Tech Campus will be a powerful engine for investment, inclusive economic growth, and job creation; and four new cross-institutional Schools of Convergence Science will bring focus and research impact to the emergent forces shaping our future at an unprecedented scale: climate, energy, and sustainability; human and AI; health, medtech and robotics; space, security science, and telecommunications.
People are at the core of Imperial’s success and are key to delivering our new institutional strategy. To ensure our strategy will have a meaningful and enduring impact, through our Imperial Together work, in particular, ‘Great People’, we will create opportunities for everyone in our community to fulfil their potential, always guided by our values and behaviours: Respect, Collaboration, Excellence, Innovation and Integrity.
As the Chief People Officer, you will provide leadership for Imperial’s people strategy, enhancing our success through the development of strategic initiatives that add value to the staff experience and improve organisational effectiveness.
A collaborative and experienced HR professional, adept at operating at Director level in complex, matrix environments, you will report directly to the President. You will oversee the culture, development, organisation and recruitment of Imperial’s employees and provide strategic counsel as a member of the University Management Board.
Imperial employs 8,500 staff from over 115 countries and the scientific focus and international stature of the University, combined with the resulting complexity of our workforce, means we are a sophisticated, demanding and intensive user of HR.
The successful candidate will lead a Human Resources department (circa 165 FTE), manage a budget of over £15m, and deliver user-focused services that support Imperial’s strategic objectives, delivering high-quality, sustainable solutions that are appropriately balanced with legal and compliance obligations.
The post holder will also collaborate with colleagues from Finance and Research in the implementation of our new operating model for key administrative services, underpinned by a new ERP, that will be implemented in due course.
